Moana Research Launches Inaugural Pacific Seminar Series

The 2019 Moana Research Seminar Series

The inaugural 2019 Moana Research Seminar series will engage Pacific parents, community leaders and professionals in a conversation about government strategy and issues impacting Pacific children and families says Moana Research  Executive Director Dr Teuila Percival.

“The seminar series is an opportunity to reflect on the recent Child and Youth Health Strategy launched earlier this year and what this means for Pacific children, families and communities.”

“As passionate researchers, our goal is to enable parents, leaders and professionals to understand and comprehend these latest insights in the hope it will empower and inform parenting practices, local programmes and initiatives.”

The first seminar ‘Children for Change’ will take place the 28 November, and is focussed on providing the professionals and community evidence based information related to the health and wellbeing of Pasifika children (0-5 years) in New Zealand.

Day two (29 November) is focussed on ‘Data Sovereignty’ and is an opportunity for researchers and policymakers to gather and discuss the benefits and risks of data collection such as big data and genomics for Pacific people.

“As health professionals we use data on a daily basis,” says Malaetogia Jacinta Faalili-Fidow.  “But we need to talanoa about the responsibility we have when we are gathering data from our own Pasifika communities and how to protect it so it is not misused,” says Jacinta.

“We are also grateful for the partnership with the Ministry of Pacific Peoples who have helped us to make Day Two free of charge – but you still need to register,” says Jacinta.

Moana Research are a group of passionate researchers and clinicians committed to making the early years the best start in life for all children.
